Well once again I prove that I sort of suck at keeping my new years resolution but better late than never. The truth is, I am struggling right now. The state of the world aside, it's not even my work right now even though I am adrift in a sea of deadlines.
It's that I am in my mid 40's and what is depressingly common is that I am not sure about whether I will still be employed this time next year. That's right, not even having won a fellowship and a couple of other bids and somehow having some degree of seniority in one's field does not mean you have anything resembling job security. Why some people think that this is an acceptable way to treat researchers is beyond me.
I can assure you, having me spend a good 30 - 40% of my working time looking for bids, researching for bids on the off-chance I might be eligible given that I've aged out of Early Careers but no permanent position, which is so much fun since there is nothing quite like a funding kaiso trap.
There are fewer more tedious things than hearing about how your field of research is so important and then see that talk is cheap but actual funding is expensive.
As for motivation = a big fat NO. I still can lock in when I'm in the zone but there is nothing quite like the creeping feeling of apathy when you see nothing but uncertainty nevermind the absurdity of research on long-term infrastructure projects that somehow you are supposed to do in 6 month - 2 year increments. There is nothing quite like the feeling of being a fraudster when doing outreach about how awesome a life is in science when all you see is a cliff edge.
Rant over for now - I hope other people have more luck and some of that is contagious.

I need to get better at this - journaling is arguably a better use of time than doomscrolling after all.
We have survived 2025 if you are reading this.
2026 is going to be a hard year wherever you are. For those in the US, continue to fight against fascism - look for the helpers. For us in the UK we must also do so - Reform sees what is going on in the US and like Trumpers finds joy in the cruelty and violence. It is depressing how many people do until it happens to them that it.
That is not to say we are doomed. Our adversaries and bad actors want us to feel that way. What we need to do is remember we are far more alike than we are different and our differences are our strengths. We are far better when we help each other and collaborate.
We are never as powerless as we think. We write and communicate and our voices are resistance while silence is compliance and an accessory to violence.
Here's to the long haul that will be 2026.

Considering last year I posted 0 times in a year, I've done better this time.
Well there have been some triumphs against the background of a mad world but one that is waking up.
I wonder whom else is here and how has this year been for you?
I will read all your comments and respond, I promise.
Have won a bid, got more papers, as an academic that is important but still no stability. You'd have thought at this stage it might have happened by now but no, not yet. I can still be unemployed.
Now to think of other things and not procrastinate over failing to write Christmas cards.

The blank look
The silence
As you see those illegals rounded up

The blank look
‘You’re overreacting!’
As your bodily autonomy is stripped to cheers of joy

The cheers keep on coming to the sound of tax cuts
And silent at the sound of teachers
Going to food banks and going without so their classes can read and write

The blank look
‘The Economy is doing great!’
The Line goes up; As does unemployment

‘Why do YOU care? They don’t deserve
You’ll think that
As if you can never become one of them

The blank look
The silence
‘People are scared, people are being dragged off the street by the secret police!’
In 2025 as for 1943

Then you child is crying
They haven’t seen their friend after their apartment complex was raided
Teachers counselling their class that they keep their doors shut if ICE come round

Are you still silent?

The shop you go to on the way to work
For a quick lunch or a chocolate bar
Closed – owners have gone or disappeared
An annoying inconvenience?

You are late to work and reprimanded
Traffic jam as two teenagers flee
From masked enforcers as they shout ‘I’m 15!’
A blank stare to your boss

You have some time off
But the parks are shut
An annoying inconvenience?

Are you still silent
Are you wondering where will there be a point
When you are next?

Are you comfortable
That it won’t happen to you
That is until it does
Wherever you are?

Here I am, I'm trying to cut down on doomscrolling and taking my own advice to write and to create both for my own needs and perhaps for anyone else who is reading this.

I do appreciate you all who are on here that do although there has hardly been anything that I have added since then.

So this will be a place where I will post some creative writing I have in mind. I look forward to seeing yours.

I need to spend more time here and less time doomscrolling - I am very bad at taking my own advice as it happens.
2025 is definitely one of the years of all time. Another Trump presidency, a stolen election and at least two genocides in plain site. While we want this all to stop we can still work on what we can control. Angst might not change the situation but try telling that to my mind at 1am.

Since Saturday graced us with the Sun in the sky I realize how much I have missed being outdoors even if I had to snatch the time between squalls.

This year my plans are: Tomatoes, garlic, chillies - including the overwintered peppers from last year. For the first time I'm going to attempt brocolli - we eat enough of it.

Just one problem - a bit less rain to keep the garden from looking like a swamp.
But the garden is waking up.

Assuming anyone reading this has even seen the news - the US Government is on fire but the call is coming inside the house. The billionaires are ripping it apart as we speak with critical science data and resources being scrubbed as we speak

This is a call to anyone with back-up capacity to download as much from the CDC, NASA, NOAA and other Government websites as much as they can. We are seeing a Nazi takeover and theft of a country in real time.

WHat we can do - I am divesting from Facebook, Amazon for a start. Donate to Wikipedia and The Wayback machine. I will write to my MP about what needs to be done with the US since they are in a very dangerous state right now.

We can make the fall of the oligarchs happen but not on our own.

An opportunity for an expensive day off and another step in my (very) long term plan to have a fractal bodysuit. This is a piece to link between the top of my ribs and what will eventually be on my hips. It's in outline with some blackwork since attempting to do colour would have been rather dumb in terms of overworking the skin. That and we need to figure out how to finish the top and bottom.
Here is the work in progress:

Not sure if this will link

Who'd have thought it would take a whole working day to see contractors, mark a couple of lab scripts, write some emails, read some more emails and procrastinate over other emails until I can answer them?

I can tell the year has started by the 3 deadlines that finish this week. It's one way to get papers out in a timely fashion. Not to mention all the meetings. But that is the nature of research - nothing gets done if people don't talk to each other but then there is the rub- difficult to get things done when you are in meetings.
Still at least a purpose to cold, dark winter weather is that I'm not missing out being glued to my desk!

Hello and welcome! I wonder whom else is here from Facebook! I cannot hang round there anymore now that fact-checking is a thing of the past.

Not sure whom else I know will come here but I'm looking forward to meeting new people here as well. Here's to updating my final Facebook post with a link to here.

I will do a proper starting post but right now I cannot think of anything since it's been a long day of meetings and other academic shenanigans.
